Etymology

أَجابَ is a Form IV verb built on the triliteral Semitic root ج-و-ب (j-w-b). The base sense of the root involves cutting through or traversing, and in this derived stem it settled into the meaning of returning a reply. The common noun جَواب ("answer") comes from the same root. Arabic is a Semitic language, so there is no Proto-Indo-European source.
