Etymology
The verb comes from the Semitic triliteral root n-j-w, which carries the idea of deliverance and getting clear of danger. The same root yields the nouns نَجاة, meaning rescue or survival, and نَجْوى, meaning a private talk. The old link is between being set apart and being kept safe.
