Etymology

بَرِيد is a loanword, not a native Arabic noun. It traces back to Latin veredus, a post-horse in the Roman relay system, and reached Arabic through Persian and Byzantine Greek. Under the caliphates the barid became the state postal and intelligence service, a network of mounted couriers. The same Latin word, in its compound paraveredus, also gave German Pferd 'horse' and English palfrey.
