تَعالَى is the Form VI verb built on the Semitic root ع-ل-و, which carries the sense of height and elevation. The same root gives عَلا 'to rise,' عالٍ 'high,' and أَعْلى 'highest.' In religious language it froze into the fixed phrase اللهُ تَعالَى, 'God, exalted is He.' In modern prose it also describes a voice or sound that rises and grows loud.
