Etymology
The word is the passive participle of the Form X verb اِسْتَقْبَلَ (istaqbala), "to face, receive, welcome." It comes from the Semitic triliteral root ق-ب-ل (q-b-l), which carries the sense of "front, before, to receive." So the future is figured as what is faced or what comes toward a person. The same root gives قِبْلة (qibla), the direction one faces in prayer.
