Etymology
مُقابِل is the active participle of the form III verb قابَلَ, to meet or to face, built on the triliteral root ق-ب-ل, which carries the ideas of facing, receiving, and accepting. The prefix mu- marks the doer of the action. From the picture of one thing standing opposite another came the sense of an equivalent and of a payment given in return. The root is common Semitic, with relatives in Aramaic and Hebrew.
