Etymology

طاقة comes from the Semitic root ط و ق (ṭ-w-q), which carries the sense of ability and the capacity to bear. The related verb أطاقَ means to be able to endure something. From the idea of capacity, the word came to mean energy or power, the capacity to do work. In modern Arabic it is the standard term in physics and for electrical power.
