Etymology

The word comes from the triliteral root ه-د-ي (h-d-y), which carries the senses of guiding and of presenting. The same root gives the verb هَدَى, to guide, and أَهْدَى, to give as a gift. A هَدِيَّة is thus the thing offered or led toward the receiver. It follows the فَعِيلَة pattern with a feminine ending.
