أَسْوَأ is the elative form of the adjective سَيِّئ (bad), built on the Semitic root س-و-ء, which carries the sense of badness, harm, and evil. The same root gives the noun سُوء (evil) and the verb سَاءَ (to be bad, to displease). The أَفْعَل pattern turns the base sense into a comparison, so the word means worse, or with the article, the worst.
