Etymology
This is the Form VI verb (the تَفاعَل pattern) of the triliteral Semitic root ن-و-ل (n-w-l), 'to hand over, reach, give.' The Form III نَاوَلَ means 'to hand something to someone'; the reflexive Form VI تَنَاوَلَ shifts this to 'to take into one's own hand, to partake of.' From physical taking the sense extended to consuming food or medicine, and then to 'taking up' a subject for discussion. Arabic belongs to the Semitic family, so there is no Indo-European root.
