Etymology
The word comes from the Semitic root sh-ʿ-r, which means to perceive or be aware. From the idea of a known or marked spot grew the sense of a sacred place where rites are performed, as in al-Mashʿar al-Haram near Mecca. The same root also yields words for feeling, consciousness, and ritual. Arabic is a Semitic language, so it has no Proto-Indo-European root.
