Etymology

آلِيّ is a relational adjective built from the noun آلة (ʾāla), meaning machine, instrument, or tool, plus the nisba suffix ـِيّ, which forms adjectives of relation. So آلِيّ literally means 'of a machine' and came to mean automatic or mechanical. The term spread in the twentieth century to label new technology, as in صَرّاف آلِيّ for an ATM and إنسان آلِيّ for a robot.
