Etymology
The word is the active participle of the verb حَضَرَ, to be present or to attend. It comes from the Semitic root ح-ض-ر, which carries the sense of presence and of settled life, in contrast to the roaming of the desert. The same root gives حَضارة, civilization, the settled state of a people.
