Etymology
نُكْتَة comes from the Arabic root ن ك ت (n-k-t), which carries the sense of marking a surface with a point or a small dot. From this grew the meaning of a fine or subtle point in speech, a remark sharp enough to stand out. Over time, especially in everyday spoken Arabic, this narrowed to its now-dominant sense: a joke.
