Etymology
Arabic borrowed مِيل from the Greek mílion, which itself came from the Latin mīlia passuum, meaning a thousand paces. The Roman mile marked out roads across the empire, and the term spread with Roman measurement. Arabic kept the unit while adapting it to local road and sea distances.
