Etymology
لُطْف comes from the Semitic root ل-ط-ف (l-ṭ-f), which carries the sense of fineness, subtlety, and gentle treatment. It is the maṣdar, or verbal noun, of the verb لَطُفَ (laṭufa), 'to be gentle or kind'. The same root gives Arabic the adjective لَطِيف (laṭīf) and, in religious usage, one of the names for God, al-Laṭīf, 'the Subtle, the Gentle'.
