Etymology
The verb comes from the triliteral Semitic root ج-ن-ي (j-n-y), whose core sense is picking or gathering, especially ripe fruit from a tree or plant. Classical Arabic extended this concrete image to wrongdoing: a person who commits an offense is said to have gathered its consequences onto himself, which is why جِنَايَة (felony) and جَانٍ (culprit) share this root. The word therefore carries both an agricultural and a legal life in the modern language.
