Etymology
The root ح ر ر (ḥ-r-r) is an old Semitic root tied to the idea of being free or noble-born, seen in حُرّ (ḥurr), "a free person," as opposed to a slave. حَرَّر uses the Form II pattern, which doubles the middle root letter to turn a plain quality into a caused action: it means to make someone or something ḥurr, that is, to free it. From there Arabic extended the sense to texts: finalizing or drafting a document was pictured as freeing it into its final shape, which gave the modern meaning "to edit." As a Semitic triliteral root, it has no Indo-European origin.
