Etymology
The word comes from the triliteral root ح-م-ل (ḥ-m-l), meaning to carry or to bear. From the sense of carrying or bearing down on something came the meaning of an attack or a charge, and from there the idea of an organized assault or campaign. Modern Arabic extended it to any concerted effort, such as an advertising or awareness campaign.
