Etymology
The word comes from the Semitic root ḥ-b-r, which in Classical Arabic carries a sense of adorning or marking a surface with color. From this root Arabic also derives ḥabbara, meaning to write in a fine, embellished style. Ink, the substance that leaves such marks, took the pattern fi‘l to form ḥibr. The same root, in a different vocalization, gives ḥabr, an old word for a religious scholar, likely tied to the idea of one who works with the pen.
