Etymology

The verb comes from the Arabic root ʿ-sh-q. Classical Arabic lexicographers, including Ibn Manzur in Lisan al-ʿArab, trace it to ʿashaqah, a climbing vine that wraps itself tightly around a tree trunk and cannot easily be pulled away. The image gave rise to a verb for love so consuming it grips a person the way the vine grips the tree. Because Arabic is a Semitic language, it has no Indo-European root, so no PIE ancestor applies here.
