Etymology

The word derives from the Arabic triliteral root خ-د-م (kh-d-m), which carries the sense of serving or attending. خادِم is the active participle of the verb خَدَمَ, "to serve," so it literally means "one who serves." The same root gives modern Arabic its word for military or civil service and, more recently, the computing term for a server.
