The word comes from the Semitic root kh-y-m, which carries the sense of pitching camp or dwelling under cover. The noun khaymah names the shelter itself, while the same root gives Arabic its verb for camping and its word for a campsite. Because the root is Semitic rather than Indo-European, it has no link to the English word tent, which comes from Latin tendere, to stretch.
