Etymology
ذاكِرَة comes from the Semitic root ذ-ك-ر, meaning to remember or to mention. It is the feminine active participle of the verb ذَكَرَ, literally the one that remembers, and came to name the faculty of memory itself. The same root gives Hebrew zakhar, to remember, and Akkadian zakāru, to name or speak. In modern Arabic it also denotes computer memory.
