Etymology
نائِب is the active participle of the verb نَابَ, 'to take a turn' and so 'to stand in for another.' The shared root ن-و-ب carries the idea of recurring turns, seen also in نَوْبة, a shift or bout. A نائِب is literally the one who takes his turn in another's place, which yields the modern senses of deputy, representative, and proxy.
