Etymology
حَضْرَة comes from the Semitic root ح-ض-ر (ḥ-ḍ-r), meaning to be present, to attend, or to settle in one place. The same root yields حَاضِر (present) and حَضَارَة (settled life, civilization), as opposed to the nomadic life of the desert. The noun names the state or place of being present, and from there it grew into a respectful way to refer to a person's presence.
