حُضُور is the verbal noun of the root ح-ض-ر, which carries the sense of being present and of settled life. The same root yields حَاضِر (present) and حَضَارَة (civilization), tying presence to the settled, urban world. Comparative Semitic links the root to words for a courtyard or enclosed settlement, such as Hebrew ḥāṣēr. As a Semitic word it has no Indo-European root.
