Etymology

قُدُوم is the verbal noun of the verb قَدِمَ, meaning to come or arrive. Both grow from the Semitic root q-d-m, whose core idea is the front, what comes before, and moving ahead. The same root gives قَدِيم, ancient, meaning what came first, and تَقَدُّم, progress, meaning movement to the front. An arrival is at root a coming to the front.
