Etymology

مَفْهُوم is the passive participle of the verb فَهِمَ, 'to understand.' Its first sense is 'understood,' and from there it became a noun meaning 'concept' or 'notion.' The form follows the مَفْعُول pattern, which turns a verb into the thing acted upon, here the thing that is grasped by the mind.
