Etymology

مُباراة is the verbal noun of the Form III verb بارى (bārā), 'to compete with.' It comes from the triliteral root ب-ر-ي, which carries the sense of vying or contending. The Form III pattern مُفاعَلة marks a reciprocal action, so the word names an event in which two sides contend against each other. Modern usage narrowed it to a sporting match.
