Etymology

ذٰلِكَ is the distal masculine demonstrative, built on the ancient Semitic demonstrative base ذا (dhā, 'this'). To it are added the لام البُعد (lām of distance), signalling that the referent is far, and the كاف الخِطاب (kāf of address), which agrees with the person being addressed. The whole word is indeclinable (مبني), keeping one fixed form regardless of case.
