Etymology
مِن descends from a common Proto-Semitic ablative/separative preposition *min meaning 'from', expressing motion or origin away from a source. It is widely attested across the Semitic family and is not related to Indo-European prepositions. In Classical and Modern Standard Arabic it broadened to cover partitive ('some of') and comparative ('than') functions.
