Etymology
رَسْم is the verbal noun of the root ر-س-م, which means to trace, to mark, or to draw. The base verb رَسَمَ means to draw a line or lay something down on a surface. From the same root come words for official decrees and prescribed fees, all built on the idea of a fixed mark. The root is Semitic, not Indo-European.
