Etymology

Arabic روبوت is a direct borrowing of the English word robot. The English word was coined by the Czech writer Karel Čapek for his 1920 play R.U.R., built from Czech robota, meaning forced labor or drudgery. That Czech word comes from a Slavic root tied to servitude, the same root that gives German Arbeit its sense of work. Arabic took the term as a ready-made loanword in the twentieth century, alongside other machine vocabulary.
