Etymology
The verb comes from the Semitic root s-ḥ-q, which centers on grinding or wearing something down to fine particles. The same root in Hebrew, šāḥaq, means to rub away or pulverize, and its noun šaḥaq names fine dust and, by extension, the clouds. Arabic keeps both threads: the concrete sense of crushing to powder and a derived sense of being worn away or remote, as in saḥīq, a deep abyss. There is no Indo-European connection; the word is wholly Semitic.
