The word comes from the Arabic root ش-ه-ر (sh-h-r), which produces شهر (shahr), meaning 'month'. Arabic forms relational adjectives by adding the nisba suffix -iyy to a noun, so شهر plus -iyy gives شهري, 'of or belonging to a month'. The same triliteral root also underlies words for fame and publicity, such as مشهور (famous) and شهرة (renown), likely because a new month was traditionally announced or made known at the sighting of the crescent moon.
