Etymology

مكينة entered Arabic as a loanword, most likely through Ottoman Turkish makine, itself borrowed from French machine or Italian macchina. The chain runs back through Latin machina to Greek mēkhanē, meaning a device or contrivance. The word is not related to the native Arabic root م-ك-ن, which gives مكان (place) and تمكين (empowerment), even though the spelling looks similar. It is now standard across most Arabic dialects and in Modern Standard Arabic for engines and mechanical devices.
