Etymology
ظَنَّ comes from the triliteral Semitic root ظ-ن-ن (ẓ-n-n), which carries the sense of supposing and suspecting. As a verb it belongs to the class Arabic grammarians call verbs of the heart, which take two objects and report a mental state. The same root yields the noun ظَنّ, meaning conjecture or opinion.
