Etymology
رائِع is the active participle of the root ر-و-ع, whose verb رَاعَ means to startle, to awe, or to please. The word names something that strikes the onlooker with wonder. Over time the sense of pleasant astonishment won out, so today it simply means wonderful or splendid. The same root gives رَوْعَة, beauty or awe, and رَوائِع, masterpieces.
