Etymology
Umm descends from the Proto-Semitic word for mother, *ʾimm-. The same root surfaces across the family: Hebrew ʾem, Aramaic ʾimmā, and Akkadian ummu all mean mother. The Arabic triliteral root ʾ-m-m extends the idea to origin and leadership, which is why it also yields umma, meaning community, and imām, meaning leader.
