Etymology
The verb comes from the triliteral root ḥ-w-l, which carries the idea of turning and change. In Form III the root takes a conative sense, directing effort toward something, so ḥāwala means to make an attempt. The same root yields ḥīla, a device or stratagem, and ḥāl, a state or condition.
