Etymology

تحدّث is the Form V verb from the triliteral root ح-د-ث, whose base sense is to happen or to be new. Form II of the same root, حدّث, means to tell or narrate, and Form V turns this into the reflexive idea of talking and conversing. The root also yields حديث, which means both ordinary speech and the Hadith, the recorded sayings of the Prophet Muhammad.
