Etymology
خَيْر comes from the Semitic root خ-ي-ر, which links the ideas of being good and of choosing. The good is what one would pick, so the noun names benefit, welfare, and blessing. The same root gives the verb اِختار, to choose, and the noun خِيار, a choice. In everyday Arabic the word stands as the plain opposite of شَرّ, evil.
