Etymology
The word comes from the Semitic root ʿ-d-s, which names the lentil. Arabic ʿadas is the collective noun for lentils, and ʿadasah is the singulative form for one lentil seed. Because a lentil is round and swells in the middle, the same word was later applied to optical glass of that shape, giving ʿadasah its modern sense of lens. English took the identical path: Latin lens also meant lentil before it named a piece of curved glass.
