Etymology
Arabic شِبْه comes from the Semitic triliteral root ش-ب-ه (sh-b-h), meaning to resemble or be similar. The same root gives the verb يُشْبِه (he resembles) and the noun شِبْه, which names the state of being alike. It also works as a bound element in compounds meaning quasi- or semi-, as in شِبْه جَزِيرَة, literally the resemblance of an island, meaning peninsula.
