Etymology
The word comes from the Semitic root q-s-ṭ, whose core sense is to measure out a due share. Classical Arabic split this root in an unusual way: the plain verb qasaṭa came to mean acting unjustly, while the fourth form aqsaṭa means acting justly. The noun qisṭ kept the positive sense, meaning a fair share or an act of equity, and in modern usage it also came to mean a financial installment, a portion of a debt paid at a time.
