The word comes from the Arabic root ب و ل, which gives the noun بَوْل (bawl, urine) and the verb بَالَ (baala, to urinate). Adding the nisba suffix ـِيّ (-iyy), which turns a noun into a relational adjective, produces بَوْلِيّ, meaning of or relating to urine. The pattern is the same one used to form ordinary Arabic adjectives of relation, like مِصْرِيّ (Egyptian) from مِصْر (Egypt).
