The verb comes from the Semitic triliteral root s-ʕ-d, which carries the sense of happiness and good fortune. It is the form IV (causative) derivative, so it means to cause happiness rather than to feel it. The same root gives the common name Saʿīd and the noun saʿāda, meaning happiness.
