مُحْتَمَل is the passive participle of the Form VIII verb اِحْتَمَلَ, built on the triliteral root ح م ل, 'to carry or bear.' Its literal sense is 'borne' or 'endured.' The meaning then shifted to what a situation can carry or admit, and so to 'admissible, possible, probable.' Modern usage favors the senses 'likely' and 'potential.'
