Etymology

حَدِيقَة comes from the Arabic root ḥ-d-q, which carries the sense of surrounding or ringing something. A garden was first a plot of ground walled off and ringed by an embankment. The same root gives ḥadaqa, the pupil of the eye, the dark center ringed by the iris.
